Contemporary Now 2.0
CURATORIAL STATEMENT
The second edition of Contemporary Now arrives in Hyderabad as a confluence of five dynamic galleries — Art Alive (New Delhi), Ojas Art (New Delhi), Archer Art Gallery (Ahmedabad), Ashvita’s (Chennai), and Asign (Chennai). Together, they present a panoramic view of Indian contemporary art today, bringing into dialogue senior voices, mid-career artists, and a new gWhile the exhibition features artists rooted in major centers such as Delhi and Mumbai, it also looks westward to Gujarat and Maharashtra, and southward to Chennai and the Madras School — expanding the map of what constitutes contemporary practice in India. This edition celebrates the diversity of expression that thrives outside metropolitan circuits, revealing how regional lineages and vernacular aesthetics continue to inform the present.
From Archer Art Gallery come artists such as Amit Ambalal, Vrindavan Solanki, Madhavi Parekh, Manish Chavda, Nabibakhsh Mansoori, Amruta Shambharkar, and Dushyant Patel — each exploring facets of narrative, color, and abstraction that resonate with Gujarat’s artistic sensibilities.Art Alive brings together Anjaneyulu G., Chandra Bhattacharjee, Maya Burman, Paresh Maity, Vinod Daroz, Vipul Rathod, Yashwant Deshmukh, and Shibu Natesan — artists whose works reflect the sophistication and maturity of India’s contemporary visual language.
Ojas Art deepens the exhibition’s dialogue with living traditions through the works of Bhuri Bai, Lado Bai, Bhajju Shyam, Santhosh Kumar Das, Amit Mahadev Dhombhare, and Abhishek Singh — artists whose practices emerge from indigenous and narrative forms yet speak with unmistakable contemporaneity.
From Chennai, Ashvita’s and Asign present artists who embody the evolving legacy of the Madras School and the city’s distinctive modernism: Jagath Ravi, G. Gurunathan, and Maanas Udayakumar reimagine figuration and scale with quiet power, while Tanvi Kulshreshtha, Shaji Appukuttan, Niyati Parekh, Hansika Mangwani, Valay Shende, Ashna Malik, Raghu Neware, and P. Suresh Kumar represent a generation of artists whose works are fresh, experimental, and accessible to new collectors.
In bringing together 33 artists from across India, Contemporary Now: Hyderabad Edition II positions the idea of “the contemporary” as a living continuum — one that flows between the modern and the vernacular, the established and the emerging, the urban and the regional. It invites viewers to see Indian art not as a fixed narrative but as an evolving dialogue — alive with multiple voices, materials, and meanings.
In Hyderabad — a city increasingly alive with collectors, conversations, and curiosity — this edition offers a glimpse of the present moment in Indian art: expansive, rooted, and continually in motion.
