CURATORIAL STATEMENT

The Weight of Surface brings together works on paper by Achuthan Kudallur and C. Douglas, two artists whose practices are shaped as much by material engagement as by shared geographies and intellectual trajectories. Both artists were born in Kerala and arrived in Madras in pursuit of a creative life, entering a cultural milieu that would leave a lasting imprint on their work. In different ways, Madras and more specifically Cholamandal became a site of sustained inquiry, discipline, and artistic commitment.

Achuthan Kudallur lived and worked close to Cholamandal, maintaining a studio in its vicinity while remaining slightly removed from its collective identity. His engagement with the Madras art environment was inward and deliberate. Although he initially aspired to be a writer, Achuthan found his language through painting and drawing. This literary impulse never left him; instead, it translated into a sensitivity to rhythm, pause, and silence. His works on paper are built through slow accumulation layers of pigment, charcoal, ink, and erasure that lend the surface a palpable density.

Forms appear tentative, often hovering between abstraction and figuration, resisting narrative while holding emotional resonance. The paper becomes a space where thought settles gradually, bearing the weight of time and contemplation.

Achuthan passed away in 2022, leaving behind a practice marked by restraint, integrity, and quiet intensity.

C. Douglas’s journey unfolds differently, yet along parallel lines. A Cholamandal artist who studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, Douglas is deeply embedded within the institutional and communal history of the city. A painter by training, he increasingly brings words, fragments of text, and linguistic structures into his visual field. In his works on paper, line, geometry, and textual elements coexist in states of tension. Precision and disruption operate side by side, suggesting systems that are continually tested and reconfigured. Where Achuthan moved from a desire for words toward abstraction, Douglas moves from painting toward language, allowing text to function as form rather than explanation.

Seen together, these works reflect not a stylistic alignment but a shared grounding in Madras and its modernist legacy where abstraction and figuration, word and image, solitude and community remain in constant negotiation. Paper, with its immediacy and resistance, records these negotiations with clarity and force. The Weight of Surface invites close looking,

foregrounding how surface itself becomes a site of memory, geography, and sustained artistic thought.
